Blog post 1
Welcome to my new blog! This blog is will be primarily focused on the book "How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents" by Julia Alvarez. Just looking at the cover, I am already interested to see what his book is about. The cover has a picture of a dancer and since dancing is a huge part of Hispanic culture i am interested to how that will play in as well. I think this book will be focused on how the girls keep their culture alive in their lives even if they are in a totally different country. I think it will also show in depth of how they begin to change in their new world and how their new surroundings affect them. I think the title is an interesting title because it keeps me wondering why its named like that and makes me make predictions. I also think the plot will show the transition of their old life to new and how (the process) by which they begin to lose their cultures. The plot looks interesting because it seems like something I could relate to because I am also an immigrant as well. The plot talked about how 3 girls immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic because of their dad. I could see by just reading from the back cover that they are going through the same struggles and situations that I did. They try to change themselves to fit in and I want to know how exactly they start changing themselves. I look forward to seeing what this book is going to be about.

I agree that the plot definitely looks interesting. A story about three young girls moving to a completely different country sounds like a book that would draw a reader's attention. In your post you mention that you are and immigrant, how were your experiences assimilating to the culture here when you moved? Do you think anything you experienced is very similar to the feelings that another immigrant would feel? I think you should be more clear on why they were moving because the main reason their dad is making them move is because he plotted against a tyrannic dictator during the time. Also, how do you think about the first few pages of the book? Was it interesting, ordinary, or boring at all?
ReplyDeleteOur opinions are contradicting. However, your impression of the book made me more lenient about my interest of the book. Even though I am not an immigrant like the characters and you, I would be interested in how the characters would act and adapt to the new country. Will they be devastated and want to go back? Will they enjoy the new country and never regret ever moving? These thoughts were popping into my head after I read your post. The book is now starting to hinder my bad impression of it and it's thanks to you.
